The Comox Lake watershed is the source of drinking water for the main Comox Valley water system, which serves the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox and several surrounding local service areas in the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD). The combined catchment area of the reservoir is about 462 square kilometres. The CVRD has completed a regional water supply study to look at long term options to provide safe drinking water throughout the region. Comox Lake has been identified as the primary source for the foreseeable future and significant hydrological analysis has forecasted available water quantity, including under climate change scenarios. The CVRD is also in the early stages of project planning for improved water treatment as required to meet the Vancouver Island Health Authority’s (VIHA) new surface water treatment standards. The CVRD’s partnership with RES’EAU will inform any significant capital investments upgrading the region’s water supply and treatment infrastructure.
