UV-Based Disinfection and Oxidation Processes


Principle Investigators: Prof. Madjid Mohseni, UBC; Prof. Cooper Langford, University of Calgary; Prof. Benoit Barbeau, École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Objectives:
 
  1. Evaluate the efficacy and robustness of high intensity UV (<270 nm) light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the inactivation of pathogens and assess UV-LED reactor prototypes for small community and POU applications.
  2. Examine the long-term feasibility of the VUV technology and its impact on water quality.
  3. Identify a probe compound for measuring hydroxyl radical exposure and predicting reactor performance given the composition of water matrix.
  4. Develop a predictive model for scale-up applications (evaluating full scale system performance based on bench-scale results).
